Flowerpot heater? Not so much!

Tonight I wish to debunk a handy little DIY heater project that was going around last year. I decided that since it has been chilly here in Florida at least for us that I was going to do the flowerpot tea candle heater! So as per the multitude of DIY sites and youtube videos I have done the following.

1) Take one metal pie pan and add 4 tea light candles.
2) Light tea lights
3) put cookie rack over candles
4) place a clay flower pot over the candles with the hole on bottom covered with aluminum foil or an empty tea candle tin
5) take a clay flower pot that’s bigger than first pot and place it over the first pot.

This is supposed to keep a green house a few degrees hotter and keep away frost or even heat up a small room like my bedroom. So I set this up in my living room as a test and it is maybe 2 feet away from me. I can’t feel it. In fact I can’t feel a thing until my hand is about 2 inches away from it if that. The outer pot is warm and will burn you if you touch it for more than about 2 minutes but to be honest I could probably pick it up and set it to the side no problem (I won’t though because I like non-singed fingers). There is a bit more heat coming from the top but that’s to be expected and that’s how it’s supposed to heat a room.

I think this could work as a hand warmer….but as a mini-heater…well it had better to a very small room, like maybe doghouse size. Have any of you created this with more success and if so how did you do it?
